Pioneering progress toward scalable SAF production
As Avioxx completes its second year, the UK-based sustainable fuels innovator is making significant progress in its mission to produce low-carbon jet fuel from household waste — a breakthrough that could transform the future of flight.
At the core of Avioxx’s sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) development programme is a commitment to delivering sustainable fuel at a competitive price, supporting the aviation industry’s transition to net-zero without compromising growth.
Avioxx's Advanced Fuels Laboratory is home to a range of emerging technologies focused on maximising efficiency and minimising emissions. The science and engineering team is also working to optimise reactor performance for waste-to-fuel conversion, improving the yield, quality, and efficiency of the fuel being developed.
The firm’s proprietary process harnesses solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology which generates electricity from waste-derived syngas, helping to lower fuel production costs. Green hydrogen production powered by SOFCs increases the efficiency of the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis and thus transforms the performance of traditional waste-to-SAF pathways.
Rigorous testing and development at the Advanced Fuels Lab is steadily advancing efforts to deliver a commercially viable alternative to fossil jet fuel. As this phase of laboratory research nears completion, preparations are underway for a pilot-scale plant.
The SAF development programme will lead to construction of a first-of-a-kind (FOAK) commercial facility with the capacity to produce 32,000 tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) per year. When large-scale production commences, the environmental benefits will be substantial. Current process models show that for every tonne of fuel consumed, approximate 11.5 tonnes of CO2 are prevented from entering the atmosphere. In addition, synthetic fuels can offer operational benefits, including longer engine life and elimination of contrail formation. These benefits will help to sustain the air travel industry into the future.
By aligning around a shared goal, stakeholders must work together to accelerate innovation and overcome the barriers to sustainable flight. As Avioxx scales both its production and business, it is building a foundation of cross-sector collaboration, bringing together experts in science and engineering, waste management, fuel production, and aviation. The firm also recognises the importance of strong policy frameworks and long-term investment to support the transition from research to industry-wide adoption.
Avioxx is backed by Trailfinders, a major British travel company, signalling confidence in both the technology and the future of sustainable air travel. By addressing two of today’s most pressing global issues, aviation emissions and waste management, the Avioxx Process is strongly positioned as a practical, scalable and cost-effective solution with long-term impact.
