Avioxx Begins Production of Synthetic Crude Oil in Runcorn, Pioneering Affordable Sustainable Aviation Fuel for the UK

Avioxx Begins Production of Synthetic Crude Oil in Runcorn, Pioneering Affordable Sustainable Aviation Fuel for the UK

RUNCORN, UK – 9th Jan 2025 – Avioxx, a leading innovator in green fuel solutions, has commissioned the production of synthetic crude oil at its Runcorn Advanced Fuel Laboratory. This marks a major step forward in the development of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) that aims to be cost-competitive with traditional fossil fuels. Avioxx believe that by leveraging low-cost household waste, they can produce sustainable fuels that match the price of fossil fuels at scale.

At a time when concerns are rising over the potential cost of the UK’s Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) mandate, Avioxx is delivering a groundbreaking solution to make green air travel affordable. Unlike conventional SAF technologies, which rely on inefficient processes and expensive feedstocks like used cooking oil, Avioxx’s patented process offers a game-changing approach — enabling SAF production at a price point that aims to eliminate excessive surcharges on air travel.

In developing their novel production process, Avioxx is laying the foundation for the UK to become a world leader in sustainable aviation fuel production. Over the coming months, the Avioxx engineering team will be focused on producing fuel at the Advanced Fuels Lab, paving the way for large-scale production. The scale-up plan will lead to the development of a unique commercial process which can be integrated into the waste industry infrastructure, relieving the huge environmental impact of current disposal methods.

A Strategic Opportunity for UK Energy Independence

Avioxx’s first-of-a-kind full-scale refinery will have the capacity to produce 40 million litres of sustainable aviation fuel per year and help the aviation industry to meet its emissions reduction targets without imposing unmanageable costs on passengers. The refinery, to be built in Cheshire, UK, will convert 250,000 tonnes of household waste into high-quality synthetic fuel, reducing landfill waste and offering a circular economy solution.

This project represents a huge opportunity for the UK to take the global lead in sustainable aviation fuel production, reducing reliance on expensive imports of both fossil-based jet fuel and conventional SAF. By investing in domestic SAF production, the UK can ensure long-term energy security, create thousands of high-value jobs, and reduce the aviation industry’s carbon footprint without pricing ordinary families out of air travel.

Each Avioxx plant is expected to cut CO2 emissions by approximately 400,000 tonnes per year, equivalent to removing 100,000 petrol cars from the road.

Chris Hancock, Co-Founder and CEO of Avioxx, commented:

“The debate around sustainable aviation fuel has been framed as a trade-off between climate responsibility and affordable air travel. That’s a false choice. Avioxx is proving that the UK can lead in green fuel innovation, reduce reliance on imported energy, and support the aviation industry—all without driving up the cost of holidays for British families. Our mission is to make sustainable fuel competitive with fossil fuel, and with our patented technology, that future is within reach.”

Backed by Travel Industry Visionaries

Avioxx is proud to have the backing of Trailfinders, the pioneering travel company founded by Sir Michael Gooley in the 1970s. This investment underscores the travel industry’s commitment to practical, sustainable solutions that protect the future of aviation while ensuring affordability for consumers.

Avioxx Urges UK to Seize Clean Fuel Opportunity

The UK has already taken the initiative to grow a SAF supply chain but must now act to develop more cost-competitive routes. Avioxx is at the forefront of this shift, and its UK based SAF technology, will reduce the reliance on imports and help to achieve energy independence at an affordable cost. With the right investment and policy support, the UK can establish global leadership in clean aviation.
